This event has ended.

Pace Primitive presents Icons of Beauty: Traditional Sculpture of Mali. The exhibition of 35 pieces focuses on the sculpture of the Dogon peoples of Mali. These intensely lyrical sculptures are among the oldest surviving wood objects from Africa dating from the 15th to early 20th century. Dogon country, which lies along the Bandiagara Cliff, contains many villages each with their own unique sculptural style.

Rather than naturalistic depictions of the human form, Dogon artists create moving abstract portraits which exude maximum spiritual force. The surfaces of these minimal masterpieces are encrusted with organic and sacrificial matter providing living evidence of a disappeared culture.
