Derek Eller Gallery presents the opening of Peter Linde Busk’s Any Port in a Storm, the inaugural exhibition in its new Lower East Side location and the artist’s first solo show in the United States. Presenting recent paintings, mosaics, wood relief collages and ceramic sculptures, Linde Busk transforms a wide array of materials into a richly textured, extraordinary tableau.
Linde Busk’s work is sincerely concerned with detritus: the literal, cultural and societal. He channels ancient Spolia architecture, where unneeded buildings or monuments were demolished and repurposed for the construction of new patchwork structures. As a result, studies, broken fragments, cuttings and other leftovers from his studio are masterfully reincorporated into his completed work. He constantly sees value in the remnants of material (i.e., wood pieces, cardboard, paper, print and color tests) others would toss aside. This approach creates parameters and constraints, while also reflecting the nature of his subjects.
The distinctive figures portrayed in Linde Busk’s work enact dark and fascinating narratives of outcasts. He sees these mythological figures as transients, failed heroes and unwanted jesters. Influenced by CoBrA and Art Brut, these carnivalesque castaways are created intuitively. They are rendered with the same concern given to the materials, asking the viewer to consider and empathize with the defeated.
Born in 1973 in Copenhagen, Peter Linde Busk lives and works in Berlin. He has exhibited extensively abroad including recent solo exhibitions at GL Strand, Copenhagen; Monitor, Rome; Josh Lilley Gallery, London; Galleri Bo Bjerggaard, Copenhagen; and Hosterbro Kunstmuseum, Hosterbro. This will be his first exhibition with the Gallery.
