La MaMa Galleria presents Same Bed, Different Dreams, an exhibition of new paintings by New York and Rome-based artist C. Finley. The exhibition features a cycle of large scale paintings in dialogue with the universal nature of dreaming, and with the human desire to understand and order the meaning of dreams.

Each canvas is proportional to a mattress set - single, full, queen, or king with corresponding pillows - and responds to the progression of the zodiac, using the elements of each sign to guide the composition. On their multicolored surfaces, various systems of symbols converge and are woven together, echoing the seemingly esoteric and illusory montage of our dreams. Shifted vertically onto the wall, the shape of each canvas-bed becomes a supernatural portal to the mystical visions embodied in dreams. Each night we fall asleep, setting out on similar journeys, crossing thresholds and inhabiting distinct worlds, as numerous and unique as we are. As Eleanor Roosevelt said, “The future belongs to
those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” These vibrant works by C. Finley explore the exquisite nature of dreams, guiding us from the realm of sleep into a collective, ecstatic awakening.

New York and Rome based artist C. Finley is known for her elaborate geometric paintings, skillful use of color and her activism through street art. Previous projects include the 2014 Whitney Houston Biennial: I’m Every Woman, and Wallpapered Dumpsters which has been featured in the New York Times, La Repubblica, the Huffington Post, NYLON Magazine, Dazed, and Women’s Wear Daily. Finley has shown internationally with exhibitions at Galerie Ernst Hilger, Vienna; Superchief Gallery Los Angeles; Jenn Singer Gallery New York; Context/Art Miami; Scope Miami and New York; FDA Projects, Rome; High Energy Constructs and Salon Oblique, Los Angeles; and the Dumba Collective, New York. As a member of the artist collective HowDoYouSayYamInAfrican?, she participated in the 2014 Whitney Biennial. Finley received her BFA from the Pratt Institute, New York and her MFA from California State University, Long Beach.
