This event has ended.

HERE presents Means of Attachment.

Means of Attachment presents the most recent of artist Polly M. Law’s explorations of symbolic landscapes of and the mechanisms of, desire and connection. Means of Attachment presents the viewer with a series of shallow box frames, windows on composed worlds, some serene, some tempestuous. These landscapes are inhabited by typically female figures, some serene, some tempest-tossed, some defiant and still flying, some surrendering. The works have something of the diorama to them as the figures are articulated and stand proud of their backgrounds. The figures were movable until fixed by the artist into the visual frame. The evanescent wave becomes a static particle, only the emotion ripples on into the void. And there are feathers- many feathers.

From Polly M. Law speaking about her background:

“Following the precepts of the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle- that one can know the velocity/direction or the location of a particle, but not both at the same time; and that observation changes the experiment here’s what I can tell you about myself: I started out as a glassblower, then became a weaver, then I worked for 20 years as an advertising pre-production illustrator and editorial illustrator for a wide variety of clients. I have been working in my bricolage/paper doll style since 2000. My bricolage works are represented by several East Coast galleries and in numerous personal collections. I am the author/creator of “The Word Project: Odd & Obscure Words- Illustrated,” a compendium of odd and obscure- but real- words from the English language that I characterize with my paper dolls. I organized and participate in the “Copyright Forum,” an occasional feature on WAMC/Northeast Public Radio’s call-in program, VoxPop. I knit, do crosswords and acrostics, I read a lot. I live and work in New York’s Mid-Hudson Valley. That’s it for past position; future velocity/direction?- well, that’s another.”

Since 1993, the award-winning HERE, Kristin Marting, Artistic Director and Kim Whitener, Producing Director, has been one of New York’s premier arts organizations and a leader in the field of producing and presenting new, hybrid art from a variety of artistic disciplines— media, visual art, installation, theater, dance, music and opera, puppetry, spoken word and performance art. HERE’s work is challenging and alternative and offers audiences the opportunity to feel that they are part of something new and fresh.
