Hark! “Presenting Shakespeare: Much Ado About Posters”

Exhibition of Bard-inspired artwork on the 400th anniversary of his passing, curated by Mirko Ilic and Steven Heller based on their recent book “Presenting Shakespeare: 1,100 Posters from Around the World”

The Art Directors Club, in partnership with renowned designer Mirko Ilic and art director, writer, SVA co-chair and ADC Hall of Fame laureate Steven Heller, is proud to announce Presenting Shakespeare: Much Ado About Posters, an exhibition featuring posters from around the world inspired by iconic poet and playwright William Shakespeare.

The exhibition is curated from the pages of Presenting Shakespeare: 1,100 Posters from Around the World, co-authored by Ilic and Heller and published last October by Princeton Architectural Press (https://www.papress.com/html/book.details.page.tpl?isbn=9781616892920).

“These vintage and contemporary missives promoting all of Shakespeare’s individual and collected works, show how the world’s greatest dramatist has influenced artists and designers to find new and relevant ways of depicting the classics,” explained Heller, co-chair of the MFA design department, School of Visual Arts and former art director at The New York Times.

“Just as centuries of theatrical artists have reimagined his works through the lens of their own time and culture, so too have illustrators and designers been inspired to create posters that reinvent Shakespeare’s well-known themes for each new generation of theatergoers,” he added.

Included in Presenting Shakespeare are poster works by ADC Hall of Fame laureates Paul Davis, Milton Glaser and Paula Scher, as well as Peter Bankov, Tomasz Boguslawsk, Erich Brechbuh, Frieder Grindler, Wieslaw Grzegorczyk, Ovidiu Hrin, George Mayhew, Scott Mckowen, Ivan Misic, David Plunkert, Dan Reisinger, Rob Smith, Lanny Sommese, Dovo Sonnson, Franciszek Starowieyski, Jovan Tarbuk, Wieslaw Walkuski and Katarzyna Zapart among others.

“This year marks the 400th anniversary of The Bard’s passing, and his influence has never waned,” said Olga Grisaitis, director of operations, ADC. “It’s a pleasure to play host to Mirko and Steven’s exhibition, and help celebrate Shakespeare’s influence on the world of design across the centuries.”

The exhibition has been made possible with the generous support of Denise Benmosche. ADC also thanks Dydo Poster Collection for their generous poster contributions.
