Arctic, Future Relics is a solo exhibition by Vanessa Albury. In the summer of 2014, Albury traveled on a Barkentine sailboat around Svalbard, Norway and the Arctic Ocean, 10 degrees latitude south of the North Pole. Taking day trips to glaciers and uninhabited islands, Albury documented the shifting, icy landscapes with a pinhole camera, 4 x 5 negatives, and the arctic light. Her resulting sculptural photographs—which integrate Canadian driftwood and found lumber from abandoned homes in Buffalo, NY— fixes geological time and the effects of climate change onto fragile prints, bare and exposed.
Albury’s serene and consciously nostalgic images are quiet and colossal. Her sculptural photographs—which pay homage to glacial ice, a relic of the future with its irreversible depletion—illuminate the embodiment of a photographic practice. In Albury’s work, the subject and her materials are the form; ecology is the system, the methodology; and decay is process. Albury uncovers the power held within, as well as the meaning assigned to, objects—whether witnessed ecologically or experienced culturally—and how that power and meaning can erode over time, however gradually.
Vanessa Albury was born in Nashville, TN in 1978 and currently lives in Brooklyn, NY. She received her MFA in Studio Art from New York University’s Steinhardt School. Albury uses analog materials to discuss ephemerality and invites spontaneous occurrences in everyday moments as a means to access the sublime. Ken Johnson ofThe New York Times calls her work “haunting.” She has exhibited her works in solo and group exhibitions internationally, including two solo shows in 2012 A Stilled Cascade of Image at Window Box Gallery (Oslo, Norway) curated by Thale Fastvold and In Waves at Monty ABN (Antwerp, Belgium) curated by Jan Van Woensel and in 2007, The Distance That Keeps You at Silverman Gallery in San Francisco. Her latest work Film Recorder is on view in Re:Re: curated by Max Lee and Erin Davis at the old Pfizer Building in Brooklyn and her Porthole Waves (Svalbard) series also shot during the Arctic Circle Residency are on view in Arctic Hysteria at Dikemark curated by LOCUS Projects (Norway). In November Albury will present work in a two-person show with Hedwig Brouckaert at Murray State University’s galleries. Albury’s work has been reviewed in art blogs, Frieze Magazine, San Francisco Guradian, Hyperallergic, Eyes Towards the Dove, ArtNet News and The New York Times, with in-depth reviews by Audrey Trans for Artiholics and by Lynn Maliszewski for White Hot Magazine. Albury has been in-residence at OxBow, Arctic Circle Residency, and Lofoten Kunstkvareteret. She is currently an Artist-in-Residence at CEPA Gallery in Buffalo, NY and a visiting artist at Watkins College of Art, Design and Film in Nashville, TN. Albury also co-curates with Rachel Rampleman The Sun That Never Sets, a nomadic, pop-up film and video art project, which is pleased to have shown in last three SPRING/BREAK Art Shows and mounted a video show in a forest. She is a contributing writer for Art Pulse Magazine and has a blog with The Huffington Pulse.
