This event has ended.

Gitler &_____ presents The Voice of Air from Atsuko Honda, comprising a selection of new pigment and watercolor paintings, and watercolor woodcuts on Washi paper. Each piece is a study in nature - a playful examination of its more sentient qualities, its penchant for assuming abstract form, and its gift for resilience and thriving in a world that’s been forsaken. The Voice of Air marks the artist’s first solo show in the U.S.

Honda’s fluid landscapes are infused with shadows and subtle creases, flooded and fractured by beams of light cast in vibrant yellows, blues, and greens. Amidst these organic frenzies is the occasional ghostly figure, indicated by a single eye or hand, emerging from thin air. The artist’s sur-naturalist motifs recall the city scenes of Delaunay or Chagall, with piquant colors that bear hints of the Fauves. And yet, Honda’s execution, subject matter, and choice of medium are all distinctly Japanese.

Traditional Japanese woodcut prints are by their nature very precise, employing exacting lines to render form. By introducing watercolor to the medium, Honda produces dreamscapes that are ethereal, kaleidoscopic, and never quite abstract in the strictest sense.

Atsuko Honda (b.1984, Osaka) utilizes traditional techniques and methods that are increasingly rare among 21st-century practitioners. She holds an MFA in Printmaking from Visva-Bharati University in India. Honda is based in Kyoto, Japan.
