Curated by Walker Waugh

Walker Waugh Art presents an exhibition of recent paintings by distinguished American abstract artist Hector Leonardi, on view by appointment at Peninsula Art Space through June 30th.

Hector Leonardi was born in 1930 and is among the second generation of American abstract artists. He received a BFA from RISD and an MFA in Painting from Yale University in 1955, where he was mentored by the artist, color theorist, and Bauhaus and Black Mountain instructor, Josef Albers.

After Yale, Leonardi worked for renowned American industrial designer Russel Wright, and later, taught color theory at The Parsons School of Design for twenty years. Since the early 1970s, Leonardi has devoted himself to a rigorous and continuously experimental studio practice, exhibiting regularly in prestigious Manhattan galleries and across the country and Europe.

Stylistically, Leonardi’s work blends European Modernism with Abstract Expressionism, and reflects a synthesis of diverse influences including Albers, Gustav Klimt, Paul Signac, and Jackson Pollack.

Over the past decade, working from his studio in Bridgehampton, Leonardi has been in a sustained period of creativity and experimentation. During this time, he has developed an innovative technical approach to his paintings, incorporating the application of strips of acrylic paint onto the canvas to produce some of the most elegantly restrained, intricately layered color field abstractions of his 45 year career.
