This event has ended.

Dillon Gallery presents “Sweet Phantom Home,” our first solo exhibition of Andrés Jaque / Office for Political Innovation.

The exhibition came about as Jaque was contemplating the tension of the seemingly “sweet” space of the home (as the gallery is located in a residential townhouse), when it is loaded with politics. This does not presume that a home is void of politics, but the opposite — that the domestic sphere is perhaps the beginning of one’s political formation and ideologies.

Jaque will be showcasing three works: COSMO, SUPERPOWERS OF TEN, and SKIN GARDENS. COSMO and SUPERPOWERS OF TEN are both new adaptations of work that is known and have been celebrated at the MoMA P.S.1, Museo Jumex, Lisbon Triennial, amongst others. However, re-contextualized to fit the townhouse, Jaque brings new layers to these works, asking what it means to take what was widely public and mass distributed into the everyday. As we are living in a society where much of politics and art belong to the spectacle, Jaque seeks to find out what happens to our ideas and commitments when they are brought into a more personal and intimate space.

Andrés Jaque is the founder of the Office for Political Innovation. He is Advanced Design Professor at Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation GSAPP Columbia University and was Visiting Professor at Princeton University SoA. He has been Tessenow Stipendiat 1998 by the Alfred Toepfer Stiftung FVS, in Hamburg, and visiting professor in a number of international universities. He has lectured extensively throughout the world including Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule in Zurich, MIT (Boston), Instituto Politecnico di Milano, Centre International pour la Ville de Paris, Centre pour l’Architecture et le Paysage (Brussels), Sociedad Central (Buenos Aires), Berlage Institut (Rotterdam) or Museo Nacional (Bogotá). He was awarded the 2016 10th Frederick Kiesler Prize for Architecture and the Arts. In 2015, Andrés Jaque/Office for Political Innovation’s COSMO project was selected as the winner of the Young Architects Program (YAP) for MoMA PS1.

Office for Political Innovation, a Madrid/New York based practice directed by Andrés Jaque, develops architectural projects that bring inclusivity into daily life.

The Office for Political Innovation’s work has instigated crucial debates for contemporary architecture. In 2012, the Museum of Modern Art of New York (MoMA) acquired their ‘IKEA Disobedients’ project as the first architectural performance to be part of its collection. In 2015 they were the winners of the Young Architects Program (YAP) and presented ’COSMO’ at MoMA PS1. In 2015, they presented ’SUPERPOWERS OF TEN’ at the Chicago Architecture Biennial, and in 2013 at Lisbon Architecture Triennale, ’Different Kinds of Water Pouring into a Swimming Pool’ for RED CAT / CalArts Center for Contemporary Arts, Los Angeles, and ’Hänsel & Gretel’s Arenas’ at La Casa Encendida, in Madrid. In 2012, they unblack-boxed Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion with the intervention ‘PHANTOM. Mies as Rendered Society’. In 2011, the research and prototype-making project ’SWEET PARLIAMENT HOME’ was presented at the Gwangju Biennale and, in 2010, the installation ‘FRAYHOME HOME’ was presented at the Biennale di Venezia 2010.

They are authors of the publications PHANTOM. Mies as Rendered Society, Different Kinds of Water Pouring into a Swimming Pool, Dulces Arenas Cotidianas, Eco-Ordinary. Codes for everyday architectural practices and Everyday Politics. Their production has been published in the most important media including A+U, Domus, El Croquis, The New York Times or Vogue, among others. This exhibition signals a new chapter. Dillon Gallery is excited to announce the formal partnership of Valerie Dillon, founder and president of Dillon Gallery since 1994, with current director, Diana Lee. This exhibition of Andrés Jaque’s works is a culmination of the gallery’s support and engagement with visionary interdisiplinary artists.
