Matt Damhave “Deleuze’n My Mind”

In 1988 to 1989, French philosopher Gilles Deleuze sat down for a series of interviews with Claire Parnet, which resulted in the 1996 documentary, L’Abècèdaire de Gilles Deleuze, decidedly to be broadcast only after Deleuze’s death. The questioning was straightforward; Parnet presented Deleuze with one word from each letter of the alphabet and asked him to place significance upon this word; A is for Animal, Z is for Zigzag, etc.
Deleuze’n My Mind is a set of new alphabet paintings by artist Matt Damhave in dialogue with Deleuze’s responses. Each title for Damhave’s new paintings give the viewer both Deleuze’s original subject and the artist’s distillation: T is for Tennis (McEnroe vs Borg); C is for Culture (Nietzsche’s Arrow). With the letter A for Animal, Deleuze discusses cats and the feline tendency towards agitation and annoyance. Damhave’s painting depicts a black cat backed into a corner in the form of “Sabo Tabby,” a symbol associated with the Industrial Workers of the World.
This exhibition follows Matt Damhave’s 2015 show, Help is on Delay, last September at White Columns. He has also been in recent group shows at V1 Gallery in Copenhagen and Various Small Fires in Los Angeles. In 2008, Matt Damhave was half gallery’s inaugural exhibition at its old Forsyth Street space. The artist works in Alphabet City, NYC.
