This event has ended.

New paintings by Monique Mouton approach the pictorial but stop short. Surfaces are flattened by contrasting lines or dispersed into washed grounds. Swaths of color, hedged borders, and floating marks are made on rippled paper while the margins host holes, fingerprints and errant pencil lines in excess.

Larger in scale than Mouton’s previous panels, the new paintings on paper continue an interest in the fragile yet persistent nature of the painted surface. Each piece is as visually distinct as it is sparse. Mouton’s compositions hold no symbolism but suggest fragments of thought or, as collected in the exhibition, self-made artifacts in the process of being rearranged.

Monique Mouton (b. 1984, Fort Collins, Colorado) lives and works in New York, NY. She received BA in Fine Arts at Emily Carr Institute in Vancouver, BC and a Master of Fine Arts at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY. Mouton has exhibited widely in the US and Canada with exhibitions at Blanket Gallery, Vancouver; Macaulay Fine Art, Vancouver; Regina Rex, New York; Fourteen30, Portland; Ottawa Art Gallery, Ottawa; Andrew Edlin Gallery, New York; CleopatraÊa, Brooklyn; Wallspace, New York and many more.
