James Fuentes presents Joshua Abelow’s solo exhibition, Freddy.
Abelow works in several mediums including large and small-scale oil painting, printmaking, pencil drawing on paper, photography, poetry, and curating. The artist uses abstraction and figuration in his paintings and drawings to explore and deal with the psychology and psychosis of the Artist.
After temporarily relocating to rural Maryland two years ago, Abelow has been working in relative solitude — focusing his energy on large works and a curatorial project called Freddy. “I was interested in the ways in which a curatorial endeavor could speak to and influence a studio-based endeavor and vice versa.”
For his third exhibition at the gallery, Abelow presents a suite of sizable, somber paintings - the culmination and synthesis of previous bodies of work. A boxer, a figure with a sword in its back, a walking figure, and a decapitated figure holding up its own head are seen alongside abstract paintings that appear to be blowing around in the wind.
Also on display is a work titled, “ART BLOG ART BLOG, March 30th, 2010, 2:51PM — March 30th, 2015, 2:51PM,” which the artist describes as a sculpture.” The SSD contains more than 13,000 blog posts previously exhibited on the artist’s blog. The work is a metaphysical text book that not only reflects Abelow’s psyche, but also functions as a window into the art community of New York City and beyond during the early 21st Century. Joshua Abelow (b. 1976) received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1998 and his MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2008. Recent solo exhibitions include Good Morning at BFA Boatos Fine Arts in São Paulo, Brazil and Running Witches at Freddy in Harris, New York.
Other solo exhibitions include presentations at Tomorrow Gallery in Toronto and Sorry We’re Closed in Brussels. His work has been included in numerous group exhibitions. A solo exhibition titled, Motion Pictures, will open at Tif Sigfrids in Los Angeles on February 14th, 2016. His work will be presented in a two-person showcase by James Fuentes at the Armory. Furthermore, the gallery will be publishing a comprehensive book of his drawings dating from 2004-2015.
