Higher Pictures presents new work by the artist Kate Steciw. This is Steciw’s second solo exhibition with Higher Pictures.

In this new series of sculptures, Steciw continues to explore the ways in which immaterial and anonymous images cycle through the emptying out, accumulation, and transformation of meaning from one digital platform to various physical forms. Here, however, she steps away from using stock photographs as her sole source material and has reintroduced her own snapshots alongside the hired images, a simple gesture that disavows any hierarchical difference between these two kinds of “forgotten” images. Steciw’s signature interventions onto and into the picture plane-geometric cutouts, colored Plexiglas overlays, chains, and stickers-appear here as digital doodles, which Steciw draws directly onto the image and are then machine-excised from the final piece. They are all, as the artist calls them, “gestures of ownership,” reclaiming the anonymous or personal with a purposeful, defiant mark.

Kate Steciw received her MFA in Photography from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2003. Recent solo exhibitions of her work have been presented at Neumeister Bar-Am in Berlin (Things of Shapes, 2016), Brand New Gallery in Milan (Shapes of Things, 2016), and Retrospective Gallery in Hudson, New York (2015). Her work was also included in Dense Mesh (2016) at Caroll/Feltcher in London, Not A Photo (2015) at The Hole in New York, and Under Constuction - New Positions in American Photography (2014-15) at Pioneer Works in New York and Foam in Amsterdam. Steciw’s work is featured on the cover of Charlotte Cotton’s defining publication Photography is Magic published by Aperture in 2015. She lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
