Kustera Projects presents The Wrong Ways to Smile, a suite of cartoon tableaux paintings and drawings by Lucia Love.

A blend of figurative abstraction, the occasional cartoon from out of your TV hole, and a steeping in pervy underground comix coalesce to form a situation:

One day you wake up to find that you are a little guy falling through some poorly constructed clouds. They stretch in all directions to an endless sheet that tapers with most concern into a vanishing point some distance beneath you, and you notice that the wind falls through your body instead of your hair. On the way down, angels hover by your side to cry for pieces of yourself that have begun to dissolve under force of gravity. React to this inescapable plight by screaming like a first responder to the industrial revolution! Any good construction worker would tell you that it would be nicer to “smile honey,” but don’t take that guff from anyone who isn’t wearing white gloves. When you find the man with white gloves, check to see if he’s a true showman - you can tell if he has no expression of his own. He’ll be handling an icon of a politician’s smile that you can try on for the next leg of your journey past the hopeless water carriers and the occasional Goliath of a desired bride blanket.

Inspired by artists like Victor Moscoso, Gladys Nilsson, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Judy Linhares, R. Crumb, and Dr. Seuss, reoccurring characters and themes create a fictional landscape of analogy, psychedelic rhythm, and humor to describe things that have definitely happened.

Lucia Love lives and works in Brooklyn, NY, and received her BFA from the School of Visual Arts in 2012. Her work has been shown at the CUE Art Foundation, Albertz Benda, Brooklyn Fireproof, Family Business, the Last Brucennial, Spring Break Art Show and B20A Gallery.
