Andre de Dienes “Marilyn and California Girls”
Steven Kasher Gallery
This event has ended.
The first New York solo show of Andre de Dienes’ work in over ten years, our exhibition features over fifty lifetime prints from the artists’ two most famous series, Marilyn Monroe and California nudes. In 1945, De Dienes was the first professional photographer to photograph Marilyn when she was just a model named Norma Jeane Dougherty. One of Marilyn’s first lovers, de Dienes was a lifelong intimate of Marilyn and photographed her privately in 1945, 1946, 1949 and 1953. His iconic photographs capture her transformation from sensitive and ambitious ingénue into Marilyn Monroe troubled star. The show also features a rare selection of de Dienes’ California nudes. In these avant-garde works de Dienes experimented with double-exposure and photo montage citing diverse influences from Brett Weston’s Dunes to Hans Bellmer’s Dolls.
