This event has ended.

Gallery d’Arte present a solo exhibition Honest Drawing: Suhyun Kim.

The drawings, ink on paper depict a variety of situations involving humans, animals, parts of their bodies and other stuff. Kim’s notional, idea-based art is a never-ending stream of curious ideas and eccentric moral conflicts. With scathing humor and strangely profound perceptions, Kim lays bare the ambiguities, comedy and pathos of everyday life.

The visual imagery that Kim utilizes in the body of work in this exhibition stems from a long evolution of methods, materials and subjects that have precedents in her earlier work in paintings with acrylic paints. Kim has consistently experimented with different media and formats, although drawing has been the mainstay of her practice.

This exhibition focuses on depicting an outspokenness of her unique, funny drawings on paper that is at once visceral and spiritual and she seeks to expand the boundaries between art and consciousness. In all these works, Kim promotes her exploratory unraveling of the world around her with images and words that beckon the viewer to appreciate the liberating power of a good laugh.

Kim’s works are reminiscent of Richard Hamilton, English painter and pop artist in early 20th century, who used to pave the way with Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Tom Wesselmann and so on. Richard’s main work was collages by cutting some images from various magazines that represented the economic situation at that time with fun and comic subject matter. Like Richard’s work, her work shows an extraordinary ability to draw, deep sensitivity and a mastery of tonality and well-balanced black-and-white work.
