This event has ended.

Andrew Thiele’s debut solo exhibition “Used & Abused,” presents the city of New York with the grit and patina the artist has watched mostly recede since coming here in the 90s. Presenting 20 new and never-before-seen paintings, this exhibition marks a major change in trajectory, albeit highly premeditated, from his accomplished work with his creative agency. Experimentation with materials both low brow and high brow cast a wide net of references both personal to the artist and also fitting for the urban sprawl, as the extreme polarities of city life are highlighted in the mixture of disparate yet purposefully-chosen materials.

Thiele’s history in visual branding is distinctly evident throughout, as he has left small bits of visual cues woven into the fabric of the exhibition. Each piece of the puzzle is identifiable as essential typography, symbols or devices we pass on our
daily commutes. The thickly-layered paint, resin, concrete and other various materials obscure the entirety of these recognizable symbols, alluding to the flux and constant inconsistencies of living in a metropolitan area where nothing stays the same for very long.
Works like Bodega, for instance, started as paintings but quickly took on another life as Thiele began to treat them as structural assemblages, much like the way he sees the city as a layered collage of influences for his studio practice. Other works, like Truthand 2nd Ave,incorporate text and color layered to disproportionate degrees, seamlessly fusing his interest in typeface and color as tools to convey sensitivities common to modern lifestyles.
About the Artist:Andrew Thiele (b. 1980) has spent over 20 years living and working in New York City. “Used & Abused,” his first exhibition dedicated purely to his art practice, is a culmination of his deep-rooted interest in Contemporary art and simultaneously in mainstream, visual marketing territory. Thiele is also the founder of the creative strategy firm Artek Creative Inc. where his clients include Universal Records, ESPN, ADIDAS and more.
