This event has ended.

Studio10 presents Crypto-somatic Incantation, an exhibition of new oil paintings by Charles Yuen, which will be on view at STUDIO10. Yuen’s work is known to inhabit a psychological space within a fabric of both formal concerns and revealing humor. A sense of quiet dislocation permeates Yuen’s work and betrays the insidious nature of the forces portrayed within his paintings. He mixes the language of abstraction with a surreal system of symbols that lyrically activate fields of color. Reminiscent of a thought traveling through memory or electromagnetic fields per- meating the body; the paintings are the result of descriptive and poetic indulgences that are both spontaneous and contemplative.

Solo exhibitions include Elizabeth Harris Gallery, Art in General, Asian American Arts Center, Metaphor Contemporary Art, LeoTony Gallery, and Valentine Gallery (all NYC), and Ada Gallery (Richmond, VA). Group shows include Brooklyn Museum of Art, New Museum, Newark Museum, Artist Space, Exit Art, Pierogi, Barbara Gillman Gallery, Luise Ross Gallery, and Robert Steele Gallery to name a few.

He has had the honor of being a recipient of both the Adolf and Esther Gottleib Foundation Grant and the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptures Award, among other awards and grants.
