TURN Gallery presents Life is Elsewhere, Swedish artist Carl Boutard’s first exhibition in the United States.

In this new exhibition, Carl Boutard will challenge the viewers’ awareness of their own physicality and emotions by confronting us with voluminous geometrical sculptures within the gallery’s confined space. In “Life is Elsewhere,” Boutard steps away from his usual materials of bronze and wood, forming his sculpture in paper and cardboard. Separating and recombining cardboard boxes into larger sequential constructions, the artist has created a production process mimicking the workings of nature at the molecular level. Adding to this process, the cardboard boxes used have been brought to the artist’s studio by a coconut yogurt company housed in the building where Boutard works. Thus the show demonstrates a local economy and ecology of material use.

In a larger perspective, Carl Boutard’s longing for the outdoors has shaped his artistic practice. He observes and reflects on how we human beings associate with nature and culture. The exhibition is accompanied by a transcribed dialogue held between the artist and Joseph Scheier-Dolberg, assistant curator at the Asian Art Department of the Metropolitan Museum.

Boutard has completed public art projects in Sweden and Germany for patrons including The Public Art Agency Sweden. His work has been exhibited at Lars Bohman Gallery in Stockholm, Sweden, The Living Art Museum in Reykjavik, Iceland, and Lunds Konsthall and Artipelag, Stockholm, Sweden. He earned his BA at the Iceland Academy of the Arts and graduated with an MFA from the Malmö Art Academy. He also holds a BSc in Architecture from The Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. He is currently an artist in residence at the International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP) in East Williamsburg with support from the Swedish Arts Grants Committee. Born 1975 in Kiruna, Sweden, Boutard resides in Berlin, Germany.
