This event has ended.

Figureworks presents a new series of paintings by Michael Sorgatz. This is Michael’s second solo show with the gallery and it is striking new body of work.

This work features a collection of new paintings inspired by the urban environment. Michael has explored this theme in his work for many years but this new series differs notably in composition and palette choices. His atypical, vibrantly, saturated urban settings now offer greater atmospheric qualities for which the forms move freely within. The attached image is the title piece of the show, Charmed Entanglements, which depicts the way the city and its inhabitants constantly reinvent themselves to adapt to new situations. The surface of the painting is covered with vibrant swatches of paint, featuring abstracted figures and architectural elements reduced to simple bars of color.

Michael says of his work, “In my pictures I depict figures walking either individually or in small groups. The composition resembles the view of a city street with the placement of pedestrians creating a visual rhythm as they move through the space. My paintings feature a highly abstracted method of depiction – a figure can be reduced to a gesture or built from simple shapes, while architectural elements are noted with directional lines. Figures can emerge from the activity on the painting’s surface or the image can deconstruct into an abstract exploration of pictorial elements depending on how different passages are viewed”.
