Ruby Silvious “363 Days of Tea”

Atlantic Gallery presents an exhibition of new works by artist and graphic designer Ruby Silvious.
The exhibit will feature select paintings created for a new book by Ms. Silvious, 363 Days of Tea: A Visual Journal on Used Tea Bags, to be released in the Fall of this year.
The paintings were created on used tea bags, a medium that the artist discovered while experimenting with diverse recycled materials as her canvas, among them pistachio shells and eggshells. Silvious began saving tea bags from her morning tea, cleaning out the contents, and setting the empty bags on a paper towel to dry. Some bags were opened out flat, the shape becoming an elongated rectangle with torn edges. Others were emptied without dismantling the structure of the bag, leaving the tag and staple intact.
As a mixed-media artist, Silvious used many different approaches to the project, including printmaking techniques, drawing, collaging and altering the tea bag paper. “There is no single theme,” Silvious observes. “I love to paint random subjects that we may all encounter in our daily lives, like a sweater draped on a hanger, tea cups, wine bottles, a bowl of rice, kids at play. Of course, my journeys in Europe and Asia always bring a fresh wave of inspiration to my work, and each trip I make may spark a new focus, a new approach.” A recent month-long residency at Studio Kura in Fukuoka, Japan was especially productive.
While this exhibit will not present every work featured in the book, 363 Days of Tea: A Visual Journal on Used Tea Bags, Atlantic Gallery will be showcasing the artist’s favorite compositions. The entire collection can be seen in the book, available in September.
A visual artist and graphic designer, Ruby Silvious was educated in the U.S., Europe and Asia; she currently lives in the Hudson Valley, New York. Her art is exhibited internationally, and features in many private collections.
