poster for Studio F Minus “Air Pressure”

This event has ended.

Air Pressure is a kinetic sculptural installation created by the Toronto-based artist collective Studio F Minus. Consisting of over 175 animated fabric forms in the shape of birds, the artists have redesigned the installation for the unique public spaces of Brookfield Place. In order to create the naturalistic effect of flying, the wings of each bird move independently in a flapping motion, responding to internal air pressure fluctuations, inflating and deflating by electronic timers switching fans on and off inside each bird.

Studio F Minus creates large-scale artworks based on materials that are ephemeral and elemental, ubiquitous yet uncommon as sculpting materials. Air Pressure is a prime example of that material-based practice, taking air as its medium and as inspiration. This installation investigates the material on numerous levels—it gives form to air, suspends that form in air, and also uses that material as a force to animate the sculpture. The artwork makes viewers aware of not just the form of the sculptures, but the negative space around them—the invisible matter everywhere.
