This event has ended.

Gallery d’Arte presents Darkness at the Break of Noon: Steven Cavallo and Shine Shin-Kim. The show will be accompanied by a performance and features Shine Shin-Kim and Jiyoon Hong.

The title of this exhibit, Darkness at the Break of Noon is a line borrowed from the 1965 Bob Dylan song “It’s Alright Ma, I’m only Bleeding”. It references the Bible passage of “darkness covering the earth” when Jesus died on the cross, hinting at sin and the last judgment.

Both artists Steven Cavallo and Shine Shin-Kim have a common theme about Comfort Women. The term “comfort women” is a controversial one that refers to the approximately 200,000 women who were used as prostitutes by the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. A lot of the young women were forced into sexual slavery throughout Asia, becoming victims of the largest case of human trafficking in the 20th century. These two artists make an effort to address the Comfort Woman issue in a more general way removing it from the personal narrative.

Cavallo started to research the Comfort Woman issue in 2007 and spent much of his time interviewing survivors. He portrays a series of human figures that are composites of tortured women, combined to demonstrate the underlying beauty of the human figure. Shin-Kim is working on the One Heart Project for “Comfort Women” to connect people through quilt making with other artistic activities; ceremonial covers with cultural symbols, music and dance rituals, and other types of performances that offer release from social trauma.

Cavallo is a watercolorist based in New York and New Jersey. He received his BA in Media Arts at School of Visual Art in 1979, and has enjoyed several solo and many group exhibitions. He also lectures, teaches, and curates throughout the United States. He currently lives in New Jersey and continues his work on the theme of comfort women.

Shin-Kim is a Korean-born artist based in Korea and the United States. She studied art education at Chonnam National University in Korea and began her project One Heart Quilt and One Heart Ritual, in 2013. She continues to work on it by quilting and performing while collaborating with other artists.
