The Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning (JCAL) begins its month-long Black History Month Celebration Series with the opening of the exhibition WEUSI.com.
Curated by MLJ Johnson, this exhibit showcases work by WEUSI Artist Collective members: Che Baraka / Stanwyck E. Cromwell / Robert Daniels / Taiwo DuVall / Gaylord Hassan / Rod Ivey / MLJ Johnson / Dindga McCannon / Karl A. McIntosh / Otto Neals /
Ademola Olugebefola / Okoe Pyatt / Ed Sherman / Emmett Wigglesworth.
Established in Harlem in 1965, the Weusi Artist Collective emerged against the backdrop of the Black Arts Movement, during a historical period that was both fertile and turbulent. During that time, invisibility of African and African American visual artists and the misrepresentation of black culture were the norm. By making African iconic symbols and references a central part of their work, Weusi artists, attempted to create politically engaged work that emphasized the African American cultural and historical experience.
