Jean-Luc and Takako Richard present “Terra Incognita” a solo exhibition by New York based artist Jordan Broadworth. This is his first solo exhibition in our new space on the Lower East Side, in New York City. Born in Ontario in 1968 Broadworth established in New York City. His paintings get the density, saturation, and energy that you can experiment in your daily life only when you live and work in New York City.
At first glance, Jordan’s work feels like a juxtaposition of patterns and textures, like a mono-print.

As you observe closely, there are no other mediums but oil paint. He works on “wet on wet” layers and always keeps the momentum going. On top of the background in most of the works the artist creates a grid, with horizontal and vertical lines. This grid is a trademark in his paintings, which connect painting to digital screens. At the same time the grid functions like a support to insert or catch various elements like a spider net. There are similarities with the burlap canvas used by Fabian Marcaccio as a grid to catch his three dimensional “Paintants”. Some aspects of the work are predetermined while with others he works blindly, opening the work to spontaneity and chance. Considered as an abstract painter because of his gestural abstract dynamic brushstrokes, there are many figurative elements as well in it as well. The ambiguous relationship between figure and ground, chaos and order, the density of figurative and abstract elements juxtapositions, the all-over composition and arrangement of colors brings a feeling of visual fulfillment and energy.
Jordan’s work is in renowned public and corporate collections like the McDonald Stewart Art Center and the Bank of Montreal in Canada.
