Maxwell Davidson Gallery presents Analog, an exhibition of original paintings and works on paper by Victor Vasarely, many seen here for the first time. Including work from the 1950s through the 1980s, Analog traces Vasarely’s commitment to painting and his transformation of what abstract art could be.

Long considered the grandfather of Optic art, Vasarely viewed himself more as a student of art and abstraction, evolving from a Bauhaus background in his native Hungary. His work was systematic, focusing on graphic intricacy to create his indelible images. Today, in the digital age, it seems simple to create the vibrating, eye-popping, mind-bending images that Vasarely made by hand. This exhibition includes, paintings, collage, and several original Programes – detailed studies for the artist’s complex paintings.

This is the first show for Victor Vasarely at Maxwell Davidson Gallery, and the first show of the artist’s work in New York in decades. Vasarely’s work is in most major museum collections around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery; the Tate Gallery, London; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; and hundreds more.
