In June, the gallery is proud to present six geographically diverse and provocative solo shows ranging from Kenneth Hoffman’s images of Vietnam taken while he was an Army Lieutenant during the war to Robert Kalman’s images of the elders of Larreynaga, Nicagara to Neil O. Lawner’s amusing look at New York City’s holiday windows. Irene Imfeld’s Vacant Nests, the third and final portfolio selected from our annual International Portfolio Competition rounds out the exhibition.
Beautiful Imperfect

“I served a tour of duty as an Army Lieutenant in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970 working as a photographer-film director. These photographs do not document the war per se, but depict the people of Vietnam as they lived in their war-torn country. They record an aspect of the war otherwise not widely documented or preserved but should not be forgotten.”

“Larreynaga is a small Nicaraguan farming community located in a harsh, arid region that’s sparsely populated because it borders on being inhospitable. In this out of the way impoverished village with limited access to health resources, there are a considerable number of elders, people ranging in age from their 70′s to 100′s. This series of formal black and white portraits is a dignified tribute to these remarkably resilient individuals.”

“New York City offers so much to arouse the senses. On Fifth Avenue, the transformation of the storefront display windows in preparation for the holiday shopping season is a prime example of a visual cacophony. In making these photographs, I pointed my camera at the seasonal window displays with the intention of documenting the interesting juxtaposition of energetic people performing their annual seasonal shopping ritual on Fifth Avenue. In doing so, I found not only what I sought, but also an added bonus for me…. a bit of humor.”
The Children of Vigário Geral

This project evolved as I documented the activities of one of AfroReggae’s (an NGO promoting social change) culture centers in Vigário Geral, a favela in northern Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I immersed myself in the rhythm of the location; working by instinct with no set plan. The sheer pleasure of hanging out with the children and their energy was what inspired this work.

“Walking up the block toward home in Brooklyn in 2015, I stopped to pick up an autumn leaf. In July. The leaf was brittle and brown along its top third, while the lush green living part seemed to be engaged in a fighting retreat toward the stem. There was no question about the ultimate outcome.”

From Berkeley, CA Irene Imfeld’s award-winning extreme close-up views of small birds acquire an abstract quality while showing their exquisite natural form and the fine details of their anatomy.
Soho Photo Gallery’s panel of jurors for the 2016 International Portfolio Competition selected three portfolios for exhibition. Each portfolio will be on exhibit for one month. There were 152 portfolios submitted consisting of 2,525 images. The portfolios came from 28 states and 14 countries. Irene Imfeld is the third exhibited winner.
