This event has ended.

Split Level Gallery presents a solo show of paintings and drawings by longtime Dumbo resident Ed Rath, featuring images from his series on animated tree trunks. These cartoon characters, with their stiff, wooden gestures, act out various human situations. Stupidity, vices, and moral dilemmas are featured. Incapable of seeing the big picture, these beings experience life as a series of actions and reactions, where the consequences of their actions are never anticipated. For Rath, these images function as both social statement and a comic personification of the creative process.

In the latest iterations, Rath’s animated trees contrast our mundane everyday existence with parodic renditions of famous images from art history, delivering, in the process, new food for thought for discriminating art viewers.

The current show revisits THE OTHER SIDE – Paintings and Drawings by Ed Rath, which opened at the Pottsville Museum in Pottsville, PA., in May, 2014. Organized by curator David Johnson, the show featured art work by Ed Rath on the theme of “The Afterlife.” Johnson, who has followed Ed’s work since attending the Minneapolis College of Art & Designs together in the seventies, noticed subtle changes in the landscapes and figures Rath painted while developing this breakaway body of work. He interviewed Rath about these developments, and put together a compelling book about his theories on how Rath’s work evolved over the past four decades.
