An interactive video installation featuring the “Cloud Tunnel” by Jeanne Wilkinson
Jeanne Wilkinson’s Painted People are a kind of Paleo-Postmodern clan of wanderers who go on vision quests and travels both “real” and virtual. Formerly Barbies, Kens and GI Joes, they were transformed in her studio, stripped of their pop-culture 20th century identities and painted with abstract expressionist drips in a red, yellow and blue Mondrian palette.
Accompanied by their companion animals, the clan traverses an earth that has been altered by their presence to reflect a world of premonition, environmental change (apocalypse?) and natural magic. And in this installation, the Painted People move past our planetary restrictions, courtesy of the Hubble telescope’s visionary imagery.
Formerly an abstract painter, Jeanne Wilkinson now works with digital collage and video installation. In the Five Myles installation, two projectors on opposite sides of the room send imagery onto two parallel translucent scrims hanging in the middle. Each projector features a different image stream, one of the Painted People floating and flying, and another of their various environments, both earthly and beyond. The imagery meets on the scrims in an everchanging interaction, creating the “cloud tunnel” where people can walk and be immersed within the imagery. Their interactions create more patterns and shadows that Wilkinson films, creating yet another layer in the process.
Jeanne Wilkinson is an artist and writer living and working in Brooklyn, NY. Her work has been shown in numerous venues both in the US and internationally. Her videos have been screened at BAM and the Greenpoint Film Festival, and a fictional piece was recently featured in Columbia Journal’s online magazine.
