hpgrp GALLERY NEW YROK presents I ♥ Tools an exhibition of new works by Makiko Azakami. The exhibition will debut a series of her trademark hyperrealistic sculptures of everyday objects made from precisely cut and folded paper.

A former designer for Sony Creative Products, Azakami’s interest in 3D modeling first began at University when she worked as a modeler in the offices of noted architect Kisho Kurokawa. This interest led to a study of sogetsu flower arrangement and further studies under hat designer Akio Hirata, which formed the basis of her later techniques.

An impulsive urge to create a sculpture of Godzilla led to a more serious interest in the arts, culminating in her first exhibition in Tokyo in 1985. The works in the exhibition were displayed as photographs, and the “cute” reception that the diminutive subjects received bothered Azakami. Many years later, when visiting an exhibition of Australian sculptor Ron Mueck, Azakami was impressed by his approach to subjects and their scale.

Makiko Azakami has exhibited in more than 40 exhibitions throughout England, Finland, the United States, and Japan, including exhibitions at the Bristol City Museum, the Fukushima Museum of Art, and the Ise Museum of Modern Art. In addition, her work has been employed in book jackets, magazine covers, fashion spreads and billboards across Japan. She lives and works in Tokyo.
