This event has ended.

Lynne Mayocole has an abiding obsession with accordion books. So, too, has her close friend Irene Christensen. It was an easy decision for Mayocole, a member of Ceres, to invite Christensen to help “paper the walls” for a collaborative show of their work.

Lynne Mayocole is a sculptor. But during a period of great personal sorrow, an accordion book reached out to her in a Japanese bookstore, and since then she has never been without her books and pens and colored pencils. They traveled with her to Santa Fe and to Costa Rica, and, in Riez, a small medieval town in Provence, she daily drew the surrounding scenes from her balcony. Some of her drawings are abstract or imagined images.

Very few of these twelve years’ worth of accordion books have been shown before now. Mayocole has exhibited her sculpture in many venues, most recently her outdoor works in Collaborative Concepts, The Farm, Garrison, NY, for several years in a row until 2015, and her installations at Ceres Gallery. She has had several collaborative 2-person shows, in New York and Pennsylvania, and has been in many group shows. Her work Fugitive Figures 12, in a permanent installation in the Fox Street Garden, funded by the Bronx Council on the Arts

Irene Christensen’s art expresses her visions of a past era, and is reflective of her strong commitment to the environmental. In her use of metaphorical figures, Christensen weaves mystical tales conjured by the equilibrium of humans and nature. Each of her books is a symbolic narrative of the artist’s experiences as well as a response to the structure of the book itself.
