SANDRA GERING INC. presents Angles, Dove Bradshaw’s seventh one-person exhibition with the gallery and the first time an exhibition has been dedicated exclusively to these works.

Since 2000, Bradshaw has produced Angles, a series of triangular paintings with chamfered edges. Each has an inner triangle one quarter the size of the whole, set off-kilter. Their theme counters indeterminacy with a strict methodology, a juxtaposition that is apparent in much of the artist’s work and particularly so in this series. For example, Angles 12 Rotations previously exhibited all twelve hanging variations when either one side of the inner or outer triangle was level with the horizon. In others, a single painting has been ‘scored’ using the throw of dice to rotate its position each day of an exhibition. A variety of surface treatments are also explored between the inner and outer triangles: textured, polished, incised, linen covered, raw wood, and so on. Here Bradshaw has again given herself the freedom to select rules enlivened by uncertainty, a paradox that lies at the core of her practice.

Angles coincides with Bradshaw’s exhibition Unintended Consequences at Danese/Corey, New York where chance plays on the unstable materials in her chemical paintings as well as the forms of her 3D-printed enlargements of exploded bullets.

Dove Bradshaw has exhibited internationally since 1975. Her work can be found in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Getty Center, Malibu, CA, the Art Institute of Chicago, IL, The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C., the Kunstmuseum, Dusseldorf, the British Museum, London, and the Centre Pompidou, Paris, among others. Along with her husband William Anastasi, she has been closely associated with composer John Cage and choreographer Merce Cunningham, working collaboratively as Co-Artistic Advisors for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company from 1984 to its closing in 2011, designing décor and costumes for stage and screen and informing each other’s output in significant ways. Bradshaw has maintained an active lecture presence, with venues including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Rubin Museum of Art, New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and the Mattress Factory, Pittsburgh, among others. In 2003, a monograph was published featuring work from 1969 through 2002, with an essay by Thomas McEvilley and republication of John Cage and Thomas McEvilley, A Conversation dedicated to her oeuvre. She works in a variety of media including sculpture, painting, printmaking and film. Recently, five of Bradshaw’s outdoor sculptures were included in the garden of the Noguchi Museum, Queens, in the exhibition Museum of Stones. The artist was born and lives and works in New York.
