This event has ended.

Tanja Grunert presents Parallax Redux, a film and sound installation by Alexandre Khondji. The film, shot in Paris in 2015, and originally made as part of Khondji’s thesis in Film & Electronic Arts at Bard College, is here entirely rethought for the context of this week-long installation, where notions of fiction and reality are asked to cohabit and interact.

Down the stairs of the gallery, two large screens present a new and unique version of the narrative, where images and sounds have been reimagined for the purpose of the installation. Scripted sequences once abandoned now reappear on screen. Others, present in the original cut of the film, have disappeared. Outside, on both the front balcony and the rooftop of the gallery, microphones record in real time the sounds and movements of New York City. The live recording of the world outside the gallery simultaneously plays over the film, bringing together within the same space the sounds of the fictional environment of the film and the uninterrupted flow of life present in the city. Slowly, reality starts to become part of the fiction, making any distinction between the two almost impossible. At other times, it is the fiction that slips into our sense of reality.

In this installation Khondji fully engages with some of his most persisting questions about cinema and the spectator’s role. Through the act of remodeling a film that was once something else, he invites spectators to reflect on the conception of the film as a mutable object, one that constantly adapts and alters its form and experience to the world around it, just as living matter grows and evolves in response to its environment.

Alexandre Khondji was born in 1993 in Paris, France and lives and works between Paris and New York. In 2015, he received a BA in Film & Electronic Arts and Art History from Bard College. Parallel to his work as a filmmaker, Khondji also assists artists such as Philippe Parreno and Koo Jeong A on their films.
