This event has ended.

At his first time solo show at Studio 26 Gallery, artist Jay Friedenberg will show his fantastic color images of scenes from around the New York City area. His art is the combination of photography and post-production digital image effects. Jay’s pictures are full of vivid color and energy, some depicting rainbow webs in tree branches, others loops of light radiating through the night sky. Other effects show buildings set on fire by the setting sun and a central park lake filled with twilight glow.

Events related to the show will be a flamenco dance and poetry reading on the evening of February 20.

Jay’s photographic and artistic style has many influences but is best inspired by the impressionists who utilized optical blending techniques and use of intense color. Examples of his favorite artists in this genre include Birger Sandzen, Armond Guillaumin, and Albert Lebourg. He also favors the work of the modern Japanese woodblock print artists like Kawase Hasui and Yoshida Hiroshi who were experts at laying down adjacent colored areas to produce interacting effects. Some of his work has attempted to replicate the mosaic patterns seen in their prints. The fauvists also hold some appeal for him in terms of their use of primary colors, in particular Maurice De Vlaminck, Andre Derain and Louis Valtat. Jay’s subject matter is commonplace but highly stylized, with aerial perspective views of Manhattan and images of the Hudson River stretching off into the horizon.

Jay Friedenberg is atypical in the art community as he is both an artist and a vision scientist. For over the past 15 years he has been investigating topics in human vision related to art perception and aesthetics. He has published numerous scientific articles and uses his understanding of human beauty to inform his artwork. His photographic images have received several awards, having won him honorable mention in The Artist’s Magazine All-Media Competition in 2012. One of the works showing in the exhibition won first place in the 2015 Contemporary Art Gallery online cityscapes contest. In addition to the Studio 26 Gallery he has exhibited his works at the 440 Gallery in Park Slope, Brooklyn and at the Tivoli Art Gallery in Tivoli, New York. Jay is a member of the International Association of Empirical Aesthetics and the Pastel Society of America. His landscapes images have been published in The Pinyon Review, Cyberwit.net and The Poughkeepsie Journal newspaper. He has authored five books on graphic design.
