This event has ended.

Through exquisite abstract compositions, Marcy Hermansader creates a deeply personal investigation of the universal themes of war, sickness, disaster, hope, healing and renewal. Perhaps best understood through the contradictions they inhabit, the twelve works in the exhibition are thoughtful and inventive moving with deft precision between darkness and light that is both literal and figurative.

The paper, torn away in swaths or delicately built up in neat strips. It is drawn, painted, and sewn, creating gorges and mountains in fantastical landscapes. These are not works on paper, but works with paper that take on sculptural qualities. Eschewing the use of the figure, even when investigating concerns like sickness within her own body, the artist allows space for the viewer to form their own interpretations.

The beauty of Hermansader’s work lies in her ability to combine stark impact with delicacy and sensitivity. The contemplation of darkness shines as brightly as that of the light in these intriguing compositions, which are sure to compel even as they mystify the viewer.
