Catharina de Rijke was born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands She studied Textile Design in Delft and art history in Paris, 1981 graduated. In 1989 artistic cooperation with architects, origination of the artist group “frisse kunst”. Works in public space: Skulpturenpark Koln-Stammheim (temporary); Domvorplatz Cologne “Domblicke”, on behalf of Landscape Bandage Rheinland, Heritage Day in Cologne; Art in construction Art Hotel Lindlar; “Blickfang”, Schirmer Collection, Museum Citadel Julich. Catharina de Rijke resides and works in Cologne and Leverkusen (Germany). She is co-founder of the sculpture park in Cologne-Stammheim.
Her work was presented in solo exhibitions at (selection): Schloss Paffendorf Gallery (Bergheim), LesbroussART Gallery (Brussels), Artium Art Gallery (Luxembourg), Tenri Gallery (Cologne), Kunstverein Bad Kreuznach (Bad Kreuznach), Kurfurstliches Gartnerhaus Gallery Bonn, Goyert Gallery (Cologne), Kunsthaus Rhenania (Cologne), Kunstverein Bayreuth and at Museum Citadel Julich where her work has been included in the Schirmer Collection.

Working in series creates space and endlessness and displays strong similarities to filmic sequencing. Mimesis is not a central subject in her work. The canvas, the carrier, is the transcendence, the space where motif and artist encounter each other. It is the space where the impossible becomes possible: in the process of an obsessive and subjective tracing into the depth of the motif, realism and abstraction encounter each other. The painting becomes a representation of its own history of coming into being, rather than an actual representation of reality. De Rijke loves to go where painting becomes invisible, where she frees herself from all senses and materials. To a place where there is no horizon, only horizon-events and a floating, cheerful lightness.
