This event has ended.

The Painting Center presents the exhibition Something Else in the Main Gallery and Project Room.

Curated by Dee Shapiro and Miriam Brumer, Something Else features ten artists whose work deals with the energy inherent in living things. Each artist constructs a world in which the activity of life is visually enacted, not by specific portrayals of the forms of existence, but by an emphasis upon their innate core energies and exuberantly pulsating character.

Miriam Brumer, Michael Gellatly, Jenny Kemp, Amy Myers, Peter Reginato, Barbarie Rothstein, Dee Shapiro, Alan Van Every, Margaret Withers and Brian Wood use a semi-abstract approach in their paintings, drawings and sculptures. Movement and life processes are conveyed through the use of color, line and form. Nothing is inert. The focus here is a kind of alchemic process whereby lines are transformed into wiry gestures; paint into breathing substance or movement; and steel, wood or plastic into sprouting entities. The work of these artists alludes to life as it is happening: lines gyrate, colors swell and breathe, and synesthetic activity is evoked.

This insistence upon infusing their art with the very tempo of living itself – a characteristic that they call Something Else – is at the core of the art they create.

There will be a closing reception on April 21 at 6:00 pm, featuring a panel discussion with the artists in the show.
