This event has ended.

The Great Wave Contemporary Talents Of Japan is a benefit for the Japan Society’s Japan Earthquake Relief Fund.

Featuring:
The Ronin | Globus Artist-in-Residence Keisuke Yamaguchi

Held in conjunction with the Ronin|Globus Artist-in-Residence Program, this exhibition seeks to stimulate cross-cultural dialogue through Japan’s vanguard of visual art. This residency program provides international airfare, housing, a tatami studio space, and inclusion in Ronin Gallery’s exhibition. As March 2016 marked the fifth anniversary of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, our theme during this inaugural year is “The Great Wave: Images to Support the Japan Earthquake Relief Fund.” On May 10th, our distinguished panel of judges chose Yamaguchi’s striking paintings based on three criteria: artistic excellence, clarity of concept, and originality in interpretation of theme.

Born and raised in the mountainous region of Nagano prefecture, Keisuke Yamaguchi (OZ)’s work blends traditional techniques with modern imagery considering the power of forces unseen both natural and human. “Historically the Japanese believed that there existed many gods that inhabited everything around us, holding the ability to hit us with fearful awe-inspiring power,’” OZ said. “Similar to water, they have no real concrete form.” From gods of the sea to the emotional landscapes of the human heart, OZ calls upon the rounded forms found in nature with the unique and subtle qualities of Japanese culture to evoke the events of March 11, 2011 and the recent earthquakes in Kyushu.
