This event has ended.

For several years, Jimenez has collected Spanish and American colonial images and texts, alongside familial narratives, keepsakes and photos from the Philippines. Using these objects, she attempts to piece together an understanding of personal origin, place, history and heritage. Her research, however, has yielded more questions than answers, exposing the gaps in the historical record. Jimenez’s confrontation with the ambiguous and the unknown is the foundation of Remnants.

In this new body of work, the artist imagines her source images and objects as artifacts lost decades ago, buried in the earth and the sea. These include traditional piña fabrics, Spanish colonial photographs, and family furniture. Jimenez has excavated them, only to find they have been completely transformed by the passage of time and nature’s elements. Whether caked in earth, clay, crystallized salt and/or oxidized metals, these mutated objects now only evoke brief moments of vague familiarity. The original information has been altered, erased or disguised by their physical shift. Jimenez is interested in the idea that they are in a continued state of transforming, remaining undefined.

By placing these images and objects on display, the artist reclaims them and gives them new life. The works are meant to disrupt linear chronology, and collapse the space between written history and embodied memories within the individual. Jimenez is interested in pointing towards what is beyond the canonized narrative, to contemplate what remains invisible and absent.
