Mindfulness, being in the moment – these terms are starting to sound banal as we talk more and more about technology hijacking our attention, while our lives are growing increasingly busy as we work, commute and figure out our relationships. But what does it really mean to show up and be present to our life experience? To see, hear and take in your surroundings and interactions. To feel connected, to notice the subtleties without seeking distraction.

“Your Presence Is Requested” is an exhibition of work by six visual artists whose practice involves looking closely – at objects, environments, relationships. By paying attention they find wonder and meaning in the seemingly mundane. The work that they produce is intricate and curious; it exposes what is.

Rachel Kohn creates wall sculptural pieces and miniature paintings that are based on organic shapes found in nature, reminiscent of branches, roots and the ground. Looking at this work we are reminded of how intimately close with nature we may feel. Rachel’s “Unconditional Love” series delves into feelings and relationships, exploring the ambiguity of emotions through organic nature-like form.

Emily Roz creates luscious paintings based on the flower pods of magnolia tree from her home-town in North Carolina. More than just reminiscent of nature, the flower pods, which in her paintings appear in the crux of fertility, spilling seed, acquire a sensual, sexual meaning.

In “Fragile Cities” – installations made out of layers of colorful cheesecloth – Priscilla Stadler is not just reflecting on the urban way of life. The question in this work might be: what does it mean to remain a sentient being while treading the sea of sensory and information overload? The translucent and also utilitarian fabric integrates the physical with the poetic.

Jackie Mock is a collector – of all things trivial. She selects, frames and archives objects that are easily available and encountered on a daily basis. “Soil Samples from Every State in the United States Collected via Craigslist” is about what it sounds like – Jackie asked strangers to send her soil samples from their backyards which are now displayed in little glass bottles in a custom made cabinet.

Mayen Alcantara‘s enigmatic and poetic installation consists of drawings and music boxes that the viewer can play. The drawings are created with a device worn by a person going on a walk and are then translated into music scores for the the music boxes.

Maria Liebana finds interest in formal aspects of things. The tactile aspects of the materials, their colors and shapes entice her to invent new objects through a playful process.

“Your Presence Is Requested” is inspired by a desire to see clearly and be real in the world. The show is curated by Maria Dimanshtein, an artist and curator based in Long Island City.
