This event has ended.

STUDIO10 presenst Fred Valentine: Toward Grandfather Mountain, an exhibition of new paintings. The exhibition includes works of implied landscapes as well as paintings of overlapping geometric forms. All the paintings flirt with a trompe l’oeil frame. The painted frame also becomes a subject in the composition. This illusory element also alters how one reads the “paintings” inside the frames.

Valentine remarks, “These paintings are flat out compositions, improvisations and full thunk thoughts. They come from a place of many starts with monsters and angels from the past clearing the brush and leading the way. They are riffs on a rectangle and the idea of image making.”

Fred Valentine lives and works in Ridgewood, Queens. He was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship in 2014. He has a B.F.A. from the Columbus College of Art and Design and an M.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He is the director and owner of Valentine gallery. His work has been reviewed and featured in the New York Times, Bomb Magazine, Time Out NY, and other publications. He received a grant from the Pollack Krasner Foundation and was awarded a residency at Yaddo. He was recently included inBrooklyn Magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in Brooklyn culture.
