Sheila Schwid and Rifka Milder “Recent Paintings and Recent Prints”
Ellen Wallenstein “Woven Women”
Michael Filan “On the Wall”

Sheila Schwid’s paintings will be exhibited with recent prints made by her daughter, Rifka Milder. Schwid’s paintings are based on observation, reaction and interpretation of New York City urban street scenes, through the lens of visual reflection. The reflected shapes become abstract elements in realistic scenes, creating visual tension that is simultaneously familiar and mysterious.

Sheila Schwid is originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She received her B.A. from the University of Omaha in English Literature, and attended the Art Center College, formerly known as Art Center School in Los Angeles, in 1956. She first moved to New York City in 1959, then to Puerto Rico and Ohio, before returning to New York permanently in 1965. In 1970 she settled in the artists’ community Westbeth, where she continues to live and paint and draw. Sheila Schwid has exhibited extensively in group and solo shows, including the New York City 10th Street Galleries in 1959-60. In 1973 she was in the “Women Chose Women” exhibition at the New York Cultural Center, for which her work was reviewed by Roslyn Drexler in the Sunday, New York Times. In addition to having curated several shows, her work is held in many private collections. Website: sheilaschwid.com

Rifka Milder is showing recent monotypes for her first exhibition at the Carter Burden Gallery. Milder’s prints will be exhibited with recent paintings made by her mother, Sheila Schwid. Milder has been a painter for the majority of her career; her monotypes enter a new territory that relate to her colorful paintings. The process of working on monotypes offers her a new method to investigate color in an unpredictable way. With each application, Milder’s combinations create new colors.

Rifka Milder is originally from New York City, where she continues to live and work. She received her B.F.A. from California Institute of the Arts. Milder has exhibited internationally and nationally in solo and group shows, including at the Isabel Ignacio Galeria de Arte in Sevilla, Spain, the De Witt Wijnen in Gouda, Holland, the Gallery at the Preserve in Rockefeller State Park, Westbeth Gallery, and Merge Gallery. Her 2007 solo show was reviewed in Art In America. Isthmus Pictures and Sound recently published a suite of ten of her monoprints. Website: rifkamilder.com

Ellen Wallenstein’s first solo show at the gallery will feature collages that were created during her artist residency at the Carter Burden/Leonard Covello Senior Program from May-June 2014. Wallenstein has been using art historical subject matter for over 30 years. In her collages, she weaves portraits and then combines them with other faces, crossing centuries. These familiar, art historical women are recreated into new and exciting images. The exhibited works feature a cross section of the 150 collages Wallenstein created.

Ellen Wallenstein is a New York City based photographer and book arts artist. She received her M.F.A. in photography from Pratt Institute and her B.A. in art history from SUNY at Stony Brook. Wallenstein is the recipient of numerous awards, including a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship. She has exhibited extensively in numerous solo and group exhibitions including Opus for Anne, a one-person show at the Abrons Art Center of the Henry Street Settlement. A book of her photographs “Respecting My Elders” was published last year featuring portraits of people over 80 who have affected the American Culture. Website: ellenwallenstein.com

For his first show at the Gallery, Michael Filan will be featured in the installation space, On the Wall. Filan will create 12 works, one each day, beginning 12 days before the show opening. The process will allow him to explore his artist’s voice and vision through different lenses. Filan will reframe his practice by visually responding to everyday activities. Together these pieces will reflect on memories of a place of reverence.

Michael Filan, originally from Brooklyn, and is an abstract painter based in New York City. Filan received his B.F.A. and Masters from Pratt Institute, and attended the Art Students League in New York City. Filan is the recipient of several awards, grants, and fellowships. Filan cites a grant from the Bronx Council of the Arts for studio space in 1983 as crucial to his development as an artist. He has received five fellowships from the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Filan has shown his work in numerous solo and group shows, including the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Museum and the Bronx Museum of the Arts. His work is held in several public and corporate collections, including the Pfizer Corporation, Colgate Palmolive, the Borough of Manhattan Community College, and Sally Bingham.
