ART 101 brings 2015 to a close with an intriguing exhibition by Tom Nimen “Not Quite Human: Passengers and Their Electronics on the NYC MTA, Reimagined.”

Tom Nimen is a painter and graphic designer who lives and works in the city. He obsessively maintains journals that hold spontaneous life drawings, work concepts and sometimes product designs. And he most often creates oil paintings from journal entries.

“Although New York City has an astonishing transportation system, it is not known for peaceful commuting. And it is known, for better or worse, for unexpected chaos. With that, we passengers use our electronics as escape from whatever we encounter once the subway car doors close. My question is, to where do we escape? Over the years, I’ve passed time during long commutes by drawing while traveling. In looking over years of journals, most of my subjects are focused on their electronics. Through social media, music, games, fiction, and news, they are taken, if only momentarily, elsewhere. These paintings are fantasies of where we might go.” TRN
