This event has ended.

Stephen Gill’s work can be seen as a hybrid between documentary and conceptual work. His 25 year practice of exploring photography’s technical parameters while responding to and reflecting the times he lives through has facilitated a broad collection of work. It is this divergence that gives his work its own unique aesthetic. He can be described simultaneously as a documentarist, anthropologist, alchemist, or a sociologist, as close looking, research, and chance all play a major role in his body of work.

Currently on view is Talking To Ants, a series made in East London between 2009 and 2013. They feature objects and creatures that Gill sourced from local surroundings and placed into the body of his camera. Gill states, “I hoped through this method to encourage the spirit of the place to clamber aboard the images and be encapsulated in the film emulsion, like objects embedded in amber.” A selection from Talking To Ants will be on view at the gallery until September 30th.

Stephen’s photographs have been exhibited and are held in various international private and public collections including London’s National Portrait Gallery, The Victoria and Albert Museum, Agnes B, Victoria Miro Gallery, Sprengel Museum, Tate, Centre National de l’audiovisual, Galerie Zur Stockeregg, Archive of Modern Conflict, Christophe Guye Gallery, The Photographers’ Gallery, Palais des Beaux Arts, Leighton House Museum, Winterthur Museum, Haus Der Kunst and has had solo shows in festivals including – Recontres d’Arles, The Toronto photography festival and PHotoEspaña. Gill has also gained special recognition for his numerous, original, and beautiful self-published photo books such as Invisible, Hackney Wick, Warming Down, A Series of Disappointments, Archaeology in Reverse, Hackney Flowers, Buried, Off Ground, Coming up for Air, B-Sides, Trinidad 44 Photographs, A Book of Birds, Outside In, Coexistence, Hackney Kisses, Pigeons, Best Before End andTalking to Ants.
