This event has ended.

Sepia EYE presents Disturbing Beauty, a solo exhibition of photographs by Angelika Sher. The exhibition marks the release of the artist’s first monograph, Angelika Sher: Series, 2005–2012 (Kehrer Verlag, 2014) with an introductory essay by Elisabeth Biondi.

Drawing the viewer into a spellbound theatre of inner narratives and overlapping cultural memories, the images of Angelika Sher reveal a hypnotic yet profoundly dislocated interior universe. A sense of loss and disquieting beauty—restless, fugitive, and saturated with color—permeates these images. Supplied by her family and immediate environment, the raw material of Sher’s work is the play of memory within memory, of boundaries that elude both explanation and definition, and the fragility and loneliness of childhood.

What is a family if not a miniature of the universe, upon its large bodies attracting the little ones, with worlds created out of black holes and particles that either summon or reject each other according to electric charge? The observation of evolving coordinates’ systems, moving chaotically in daily routine, is a prerogative of the housewife. Inspecting the family upon the entropy that governs it, the supposedly clear boundary of banality begins to melt, and each moment captured by the camera records the mutual distancing of the galaxies about to come. — Angelika Sher, 2009
