Artemisa Gallery presents SHADOWS IN THE WATER, an exhibition featuring the Argentinean artist Martin Reyna.

Martin Reyna’s acrylic paintings on canvas and paper represent an ongoing exploration of landscape, architecture, the void of nothingness and light. Reyna’s dialectic works celebrate the accident as such, which can be controlled to provoke a poetic blurring of the distinction between the recognizable, the purely abstract, and the place where the two meet together.

Works featured in this exhibition represent Reyna’s most abstracted compositions, in which the formal exploration of color as a material becomes a focal point. Reyna’s brushstrokes change seamlessly across the surface between tense and relaxed, liquid and solid, through combined moments of control and abandonment. Vibrant colors shimmer, mix and drip in tandem to create a ceremonious dichotomy of spatial perspectives that becomes especially evident through the artist’s clever application of the conventional diptych and polyptych.

Reyna’s works, however, are anything but conventional. The element of repetition offers a spectacular effect that paves the way into a convergence of other worldly space. Notions of landscape meet a celestial abstract tapestry, as prismatic qualities fuse to formulate a metaphysical by-product where particles collide, explode and separate. In total, Reyna’s masterpieces have created for us a unique and sensual view of the universe unlike any other.

Reyna has been the recipient of several awards, including the Chandon Prize at ARTEBA in Argentina; Grant of Arts from Antorchas Foundation in Buenos Aires; Jean-Francois Millet Prize for Painting from SIAP in France; Costantini Prize from MNBA Buenos Aires; Nuevo Mundo Foundation Prize; and Gunther Prize for Painting from CAYC in Buenos Aires. The artist is widely exhibited throughout Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, Brazil, the US, South Korea, Spain, Germany, Belgium, and France, where the artist currently lives and works.
