This event has ended.

Karma presents an exhibition of works by Brice Marden from 1964 to 1973. A group of drawings and a single, fleshy-grey monochrome painting will be presented alongside his journals from the same seminal period.

A prolific notetaker, Marden filled his journals with familiar and personal subject matter, cataloguing daily life and the cultural and political events of the time. In addition to revealing the artist’s sense of observation, the journals were a space to formalize the painter’s ideas about color, line and form, often through esoteric and even obscure imagery, as well as renderings, diagrams and handwritten notes.

Each work, made in graphite, ink and collage, is a visible palimpsest referencing Marden’s journals. The deliberate, studied rectangles constructed with voluminous line markings directly allude to not only the physical material that he collected in the journals but also his succinct composition of both images and text.

To accompany the exhibition, two newly published facsimiles of Marden’s original journals will be released.
