This event has ended.

Heskin Contemporary presents “Ordinary Things” a joint exhibition of paintings by Shirley Irons and paintings and sculpture by Lizzie Scott.

Both artists’s work reflects a shared interest in things left on the margin. Both artists collect source material from their immediate surroundings, becoming connoisseurs of the everyday, the ordinary and the overlooked, And both believe that the accumulation of these small bits of low level information subtly influence the larger way we are led to view our environment.

Scott works in the liminal space between abstraction and representation, taking cues from construction sites, protective tarps, messages in the street, &c., handling them with lush fields of painterly color, collage and trompe l’oeil detailing. She aims to explore a non-hierarchical relationship between illusionistic painting, heroic abstraction, collage, and process. Her painting, performances and sculpture all look at the relationships between space, materiality, visual language and narratives of the mundane from a perspective informed by feminism and inspired by the urban landscape.

Irons paints from photographs she has taken, primarily of institutional spaces that invoke the state of waiting with its inherent anxiety and anticipation (airports, hospitals, museums and galleries). The memory of her participation in these sites is both specific and fluid; details like the light switches, plumbing and extension cords become the humanizing element in clinical spaces. She keeps an emotional distance from her subjects, using her accomplished paint handling to seduce and surprise. Her paintings slow down, edit out and look for permanence in the transitory.

Neither artist has a linear approach to their bodies of work; both are optimistic about the possibility to transform the way we see the world. And both acknowledge that paint is an apt vehicle to do that, a way to highlight what gets overlooked, and to ignore all the noise.

Shirley Irons has exhibited nationally and internationally. Her current exhibition, Galleries, Etc, is on view at Gallery Luisotti in Bergamot Station, Santa Monica, through January 10th, Press includes the LA Times, New York Times, Art Papers, Art Monthly, Time Out, Flash Art, Bomb, Acme, among others, and she was profiled in The New Yorker Talk of the Town.

Lizzie Scott has recently exhibited in New York City, Paris and Hudson, N.Y. She has staged performances throughout the US and in Europe. Her work has been featured and reviewed in ArtForum, The New York Times, and Time Out.
