–Monologues for Orpheus
Monologues for Orpheus is a modern adaptation of the story of Orpheus. Using an original script penned by poet Robert Kelly, Crichton Atkinson spins a hyper-hypnotic visual display that transfixes the audience much like Orpheus’ lyre did Hades and his beasts.
The myth of Orpheus tells the danger of looking back. Atkinson’s retelling examines notions of authorship, the self, language and desire while using video as a tool that both records the past and, via her unique digital manipulation, looks toward the future.
Crichton Atkinson is a director and performer. Her work has been shown in New York, Los Angeles, Denver, Pittsburg, Santa Fe, Shanghai and London. She has performed at The New Museum, Dia:Beacon and Performa. Atkinson’s theater work has been funded by the Lower Manhattan Culture Council and shown in Denver at the Denver Center for Performing Arts, in London at the Finborough Theatre and in New York at The Public Theater, HERE, Magic Future Box, The SVA Theater and The Paradise Factory. Her work has been covered by The New York Times, The New Yorker, NY1, NBC, Artforum and The Independent. Atkinson’s videos have been shown at Nothing Space, N2NM, The Tea Factory, Space Witch and 331 Gallery.
