Amos Eno Gallery presents Corpo Reality, a group exhibition featuring new works by Charleen Kavleski, Erik Patton, Meredith Starr and Cynthia Laureen Vogt.

Charleen Kavleski is a multi-media artist who synthesizes both systemic and random, palpable conceptual art with her family history of mason work and quilt making. Her shaped canvases impart a physical presence beyond the traditional illusory painted surface.

Erik Patton is interested in the performance, construction, and deconstruction of sex, gender, and sexuality. He hopes to refute the idea that our identities are somehow fixed or determined by our gender or sexual preference. His collages of pornographic images portray a scenario where the artist has remixed and redefined a mass produced sexuality for his own aesthetic needs. This disruption of the corporal subject through collage helps to subvert a three hundred year history of sexual repression to remind us that we need to be more open about our sexuality, talk about sex, and enjoy it.

Meredith Starr draws attention to the body’s interior with large-scale drawings, photolithographs and installations layered with video and sound. Starr creates a multi-sensory circuit in which the viewer experiences an awareness of the invisible forces inside them. Utilizing images culled from scientific data such as the patterns of aerosol droplets from sneezes, the cellular maps of viruses, and electron micrographs of secreted hormones producing passion, Starr’s work considers the body and its reactions to and memories of different stimuli.

In her recent artist’s books, Cynthia Laureen Vogt plays with the dynamics of body and graphic symbols of the alphabet through photographic collage to delve into the more abstract and mysterious mechanics of language found in pattern, shape, gesture, and rhythm beyond words and meaning. Now and again, photographed wooden letters loom large on the pages, their three-dimensional appearance at variance with silhouetted figures. Alternately, the semblance of physicality in both figures and letters draws a closer correlation.

To highlight the corporal nature of the art on view, a performance of electroacoustic percussion will take place on Friday, December 18 from 8:00 – 10:00 PM featuring Alex Appel, Electroacoustic Percussion Ensemble. Amos Eno Gallery is a nonprofit, 501(c)3 arts organization. Contact Mary Gagler, Amos Eno Gallery Director for more information.
